What is counseling?
Counseling is a collaborative session between a therapist and the client. A professional counselor helps the client identify goals and solutions to problems that may be causing emotional turmoil or stress in their lives. Counselors seek to help improve communication, coping skills, self-esteem, and change negative behaviors and thought patterns of the client. The overall goal of the therapist is to improve the quality of life of the client and give them the tools they need for continued growth and success.
Are counseling and therapy the same?
The terms therapy and counseling mean basically the same thing. We use the terms therapy, counseling, therapist, and counselor interchangeably to refer to treating mental, emotional, and behavioral health issues.
Do I need counseling?
As a mental health practitioner, we define mental dysfunction based on whether it affects your personal, social, or work life in a significant way. What effects one person may not have any impact on another. Everyone is different. We encourage those looking into therapy to ask themselves if their concerns are making it difficult to function in their personal, social, or work lives. If so, we encourage you to reach out. However, anybody can benefit from counseling, whether they are experiencing defined “mental dysfunction’” or not.
How long does counseling take?
Therapy looks different for every person, and it depends upon the nature and depth of issues being explored, client goals, the strengths and limitations of clients, how much work is done outside of session, and many other factors. With that in the beginning it is best to meet weekly to build a strong therapeutic relationship and establish therapy goals. Therapy can be helpful in a few sessions or last many years depending on individual needs.
